Out of that experience…\n\nViktor Frankl (1905–1997) was a Viennese psychiatrist who survived three years in Nazi concentration camps\, including Auschwitz\, losing his parents\, brother\, and pregnant wife. Out of that experience came *Man's Search for Meaning* (1946)\, one of the most influential books of the 20th century.\n\nPart memoir\, part reflection\, it asks the question: when everything is stripped away\, what keeps a person alive? Frankl's answer — that we cannot always control our suffering\, but we can always choose how we face it — emerged from what he witnessed among his fellow prisoners\, ordinary people enduring the unimaginable and still finding reasons to go on.\nCome read it with us and bring your own questions about suffering\, freedom\, and what makes a life worth living.\n\nNewer editions of the book contains several parts. We will read the main part of the book\, called "Experiences in a concentration camp" and center the discussion around that. Everyone is welcome regardless of previous philosophical experience\, but we would like everyone you to read the text ahead of time as the conversation will revolve around it. This is a space were we learn from and listen to each other\, our focus is on deliberation\, not debate. If we are a large group\, remember to leave room for everybody's voices to be heard. We read all sorts of philosophical texts\, some are easier and some are difficult. If you don't understand everything\, don't worry\, we will make sense of it together.
