Tillkomsten av Mozarts himmelskt vackra Requiem är höljt i mystik. Tonsättaren var vid dålig hälsa då han i juli 1791 söktes upp av en "okänd grå främling" som ville beställa en dödsmässa till sin uppdragsgivare. Mozart gav sig i kast med uppgiften med stor frenesi, men då han själv gick bort i början av december samma år var verket ännu ofullbordat. Saknades gjorde delar av Lacrimosa, Sanctus, Benedictus och Agnus Dei. Även orkestreringen var ofullständig på flera ställen. Mozarts änka Constanze bad Joseph von Eybler att avsluta partituret, men förutom att orkestrera musiken efter Kyrie, lämnade denne i sin tur uppgiften vidare till Mozarts elev Franz Xaver Süßmayr, som slutförde arbetet.

Bakom den mystiska beställningen låg greve Franz von Walsegg, som önskade en mässa till minne av sin bortgångna unga hustru och dessutom gärna själv ville ta åt sig äran av kompositionen. Elva år efter grevens död upptäcktes Mozarts handskrivna originalmanuskript bland de handlingar han lämnade efter sig.

Oavsett vem som har skrivit vilka delar av Requiem är det musik som fortfarande besitter en överjordisk förmåga att beröra på djupet. Och som Beethoven lär ha sagt: "Om Mozart inte skrev musiken, så var mannen som skrev den en Mozart."

The creation of Mozart's divinely beautiful Requiem is shrouded in mystery. The composer was in poor health when, in July 1791, he was approached by an "unknown grey stranger" wishing to commission a mass for the dead on behalf of his patron. Mozart threw himself into the task with great fervour, but when he died in early December of the same year the work was still unfinished. Missing were parts of the Lacrimosa, the Sanctus, the Benedictus and the Agnus Dei, and the orchestration was incomplete in several places. Mozart's widow Constanze asked Joseph von Eybler to complete the score, but apart from orchestrating the music after the Kyrie, he in turn passed the task to Mozart's pupil Franz Xaver Süssmayr, who brought the work to completion.

Behind the mysterious commission lay Count Franz von Walsegg, who wished for a mass in memory of his young late wife and moreover desired to take personal credit for the composition. Eleven years after the count's death, Mozart's handwritten original manuscript was discovered among his papers.

Regardless of who wrote which parts of the Requiem, this is music that still possesses an otherworldly ability to move us at the deepest level. As Beethoven is said to have remarked: "If Mozart did not write the music, then the man who wrote it was a Mozart."
